Plugged into the InternetWhen we think of the future, we will think about a world that is more connected than it is today, and one that uses technology like we breath. With this expansion and wider adoption of technology by the average person, we will run into issues that we have never thought of before, one of them being how we can protect an ever-increasing society and world being online more and more of the time. How will IT Security look in the next 20 to 50 years? How can we plan for these changes now to help solve the problems in the future? These are questions and concepts that I will be exploring in future posts and I hope to share my thoughts and ideas on how we can make a brighter future for humanity (both on this planet and off world). Augmented Reality When most futurists (I would put myself into this category as well) think of the future, they think of a world that is more connected. A world where everyone is online all the time. Whether it is via their handheld devices such as a cellphone or tablet, or some other similar electronic device that connects the user to the web. While this is the thinking of how things will turn out today, I would go a step further and see a world where reality and the world around us is overlaid with technology. Whether in the form of augmented reality visual and hearing devices, or some other way. The world around us will be changed in ways that will make a stroll in the part a chance to advertise to a potential consumer. We have already seen these with Microsoft’s Glass and Google Glasses as they try to augment the world around us and change our perceptions of it. This will happen either with games or other types of entertainment, but having that technology is already here. I believe this will mature and it will be more present with our everyday interactions with one another. Jacked In Being connected will go further as well with humans getting ports surgically implanted on various parts of the body. These connections will allow the user to connect their body directly to the web and have an electronic or physical sensation sent to their bodies. Whether this is because they are playing a game or even in an intimate encounter with another user on the other side of the world. These sensations will be indistinguishable from real human contact and may in some cases be more intense. This connecting to a computer or the Internet will allow people to interact in ways that we have never thought of before. While jacking in will be almost akin to becoming a cyborg, the difference being that the ports or connections are used for external devices or connections. Being a cyborg means to augment the human condition with technology in order to improve performance or ability. Jacking in will allow human beings to directly connect with the digital world, and all the good and bad that comes with that. Cybersecurity for Cyborgs When thinking of the future, its not all bright and sunny. There are many scary things that society still need to work out. Whether it is laws in place to address what it truly means to be human, or laws about human android marriage. These are areas that must be thought about and planned for, because the day when they are a reality is fast approaching, and by then we will be to late if we plan on doing something then. This leads us to how we are going to address the ills of the Internet that we know of today wreaking havoc tomorrow. When cybersecurity is dealing with computers or corporate networks its one thing. But when your physical body and your mind are connected to the Internet it is another altogether. How do we make sure a cyborgs arm or leg does not get infected or compromised by some computer bug? A once benign computer hack could now have real world consequences and effect someone’s life in a very profound way. Cybersecurity takes on a new importance at that time. Cybersecurity of the Future
Here are some areas that will need to be addressed by society as a whole in the near future:
Future Development While we are not sure on how or what technology will be developed first. The concept and the ideas about what humans will try to accomplish with technology will surely make it an exciting time to be alive. Developing a way in which new technologies can be adopted and used will be the main goal for cybersecurity professionals. Governance and putting into place protocols and regulations will help to keep everyone safe and secure. The way the regulations or requirements are implemented are difficult to say at the least. But we know we need to have them, and the sooner they are developed the sooner we can create a framework for which we can build a new society. Summary Creating a safer world of the future is what cybersecurity will be dealing will for the next 20 to 50 years. Whether it is securing the networks that will be used for high speed communications on a global scale or making sure that malware and computer viruses don’t infect or compromise technology that is surgically implanted or attached to people. It will become even more important that as IT Security Professionals that we stay up to date on the newest technology and how it will effect those who we are hired to protect. The future is bright and its filled with technology, but we must take the needed steps today to allow that future to develop in a way that enhances society, not diminishes it. This will be struggle as we still have those around us that will look for ways to compromise those systems for their own personal gain. In the future they may not be tolerated and we may be able to develop a means in which we can detect and track those that would cause havoc to the web, or even to augmentation devices or technologies.
